from Elliott
There are a lot of languages spoken around here - English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa and some hybrids. Many people speak at least some English but when it comes to important discussions or heart discussions like faith people prefer to speak in the home language or native tongue.
I just spent two hours in a meeting where no English was spoken - only Xhosa. I did know some words but not enough to follow the conversation and I had no interpreter. And the unfortunate thing was that the topic of conversation will undoubtedly impact our ministry.
Learning the language certainly has its pragmatic benefits but beyond that it also says 'We desire to engage in your story without placing expectations on you.
