Holiday 'making'

from Elliott
The term here for people on vacation is holidaymakers. Interesting, it is not a passive thing; you actively 'make' the holiday. That is different than our 'vacationers' or you are 'on vacation' which sounds more passive.

We had a long weekend and went to a very remote area in the Eastern Cape called Mbotyi. It is a rustic place of rugged land and waterfalls cascading into the sea. The rolling hills and grasslands are the domain of herders and their cows. The land is so rugged that in some places the easiest way to herd your cows to new pastures is down the rocky coast or down the beach. A herd of cows lounging on the beach is a strange sight!

We have found that ministry can become a seven day a week activity and you have to be intentional about finding sabbath rest. So the active pursuit of holiday - 'making' makes sense to me. But even while you are in pursuit, it can be fully relaxing if you are pursuing the right thing!

A hike along the coast with crashing waves and a picnic at the foot of a 100m waterfall landing in the Indian Ocean is indeed relaxing and re-orienting! And in the relaxed state it gave us an opportunity to practice our Xhosa with local children. They are always ready for a good laugh!
